"Back in simpler times, autumn 2018, I released my OST to the as-yet-only-imaginary video game, Aura of Bizabelle. This was something of a left turn for Frijsfo, previously having focused on 2step, dubstep, 140bpm and related electronica, with its sound defined by mainstays Sully, Geiom, Kuoyah, Point B, and others.
Video game music has an ongoing and well-documented influence on club music in general, and really on producers of electronic music everywhere. This is being shown in new ways by the likes of Hyperdub/DITC’s Nick Dwyer and Teki Latex with their latest Mixtape Quest Adventure dropping earlier this month - full of sick VGM mashups, edits and remixes, or the Butterz label spinning classic video game themes in live radio sets with MCs. It’s no longer just the occasional 8-bit square-wave melody or FX sample coming through. Many of us are also just listening to the soundtracks for their own sakes as they become more commonly available, without needing anyone to offer a modern take on it.
For this release, I invited Nottingham's Erra and Geiom to reinterpret a choice of theme from the soundtrack. Both used different approaches – Erra with just the original MIDI data to twist into his own already gamey, grimey sound, and Geiom taking the audio stems as samples to flip into his own FWD-thinking rhythmic feel. Enjoy!"
